AT the convenience of the public I should be considered before but operators' profits was an opinion expressed by the Northern Traffic Cornmissioners, at Carlisle, The Caledoniar Omnibus Co., Ltd., and United Auto. mobile Services, Ltd., sought to rur additional excursions and tours froir Carlisle to their respective areas Cumberland Motor Services, Ltd., objected.

For the objector, Col. Mason submitted that there was already a wick selection of tours from Carlisle, and, if multiplied, the demand would lead tc wasteful competition. He further held that the applications should be refused unless proof of demand were established.

For -the applicants it was pointed out that the Cumberland company and Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., by having recently taken over the services of °the/ operators in the district, had a numbet of vehicles in use on tours totally disproportionate to the number operated by the applicants, which had just as much interest in Carlisle as anyone else.

Sir John Maxwell, chairman, intimated that the application would be granted, saying that the acid test was the nurnher of vehicles. Operators could not prove demand for mystery tours as they could for stage services, NEW TRANSPORT COUNCIL PROPOSAL.

THE proposal to set up a National Joint Industrial Council to cover tram, trolleybns, motorbus and underground-railway workers was discussed by Scottish municipal-transport authorities, in Dundee, last week. The new council Would supersede the present body, which refers only to tramwaymen.

Hitherto, the working conditions imposed by the old council for tram workers have been adhered to in the case of bus employees by Scottish municipalities.

The draft constitution was approved.

STRIKE ACTION OUTVOTED BY BUS EMPLOYEES_

IMMEDIATE strike action was suggested by a section of the delegates at a meeting, in Edinburgh, on Sunday morning, of representative employees of the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., and -subsidiary concerns. It was even proposed that a strike he called that night. The majority, however, preferred negotiating with the company.

The demand is for a flat rate of pay throughout the whole of Scotland at Is. 5d. an hour for drivers, Is. 30. for conductors, and lid, for conductresses and junior conductors.

Sir William Thomson, managing director of the S.M.T., promised to meet the employees' negotiating committee in Edinburgh yesterday (Thursday). The result of these deliberations will be reported to a further delegate meeting to-day.
