U.A.S. AGREEMENT WITH T.G.W.U.

A GREEMENT has been reached berAtween United Automobile Services, Ltd., Darling-ton, and the Transport and General Workers Union regarding hours and conditions of bus drivers and conductors. This is the first agreement of its kind succesgully negotiated between the company and the Union, and the employees, by 1,419 votes to 258, have approved it.

The rates for drivers will be is.

per hour for the first year, rising to a maximum, of Is. 4d. after two years. For sonductors the primary rate will he 8J,d. per hour, rising to Is. Old. 'after eight years. Subject to certain conditions, it is guaranteed that not less than 90 per cent of the staff shall have a working week of 48 hours. Drivers and conductors with 12 months' continuous employment are to be given a six-day holiday each year.

GAS DOUBLE-DECKER IN WALLASEY.

Nfi n EMBERS of Wallasey Town Conok part in an experimental run, on took 29, on a municipal bus driven by -compressed coal-gas. A double-decker was used and is believed to be the first of that type in the country to be driven by compressed coal-gas. Should the experiment prove to be satisfactory, a number of other buses may be converted later. For the past 18 months, five vehicles engaged in the fuel-carrying work of the gas department have been running satisfactorily on coal-gas. The gas is carried in two C-ft. sealed cylinders, carrying 350 cubic ft. of gas, which will

run the bus for 12 miles. The driver, without leaving his cab or stopping the engine, can turn over from gas to petrol if desired, as there is full equipment for running on petrol and coal-gas alternatively.

TROLLEYBUSES TO SAVE £3,000. A NOTHER section of South Shields PI Town Council's tramways system is to be converted to trollcybus operation: The first section, from the Market Place to Freemantle Road, Cleadon, will he in operation by September. Mr. H. Muscroft, transport manager, has explained to the transport committee that the tram track in Stanhope Road requires renewal and would cost R,15,000. The route, he said, could be converted to trolleybus working at a cost of £12,000.

MORE LIONS FOR DUBLIN.

FOLLOWING an order for 20 Lions placed in January of this year, Dublin United Tramways, Ltd., has given contract ontract to Leyland Motors, Ltd., for 56 Lion chassis, equipped with 5.7-litre oil engines. The chassis components will be shipped to Ashenhurst, Williams and Co., Ltd., Dublin, the Leyland agent, which company will assemble

them.

MORE TROLLEYBUSES IN FOUR

TOWNS.

nARLINGTON, Derby, Doncaster .1.-/ and Reading are seeking power to extend their municipal trolleybus undertakings. Four Bills confirming Provisional Orders granted to these corporations were considered, last week, by the Committee on Unopposed Bills in the House of Commons. All were approved and ordered to be reported for third reading,

LATEST MUNICIPAL BUS RESULTS

THE following are the latest results of municipal transport operation during the past year :- Dundee. The total receipts were £11,622 over the estimate and £13,243 in excess of lest year's figure. The total .receipts from trams and buses amounted to £230,737. Passengers carried numbered 41,135,924-, an increase of 2,946,180 over the aggregate of 38,189,744 in the previous 12 months.

An increased mileage was run by both trams and buses, the figure for the year just closed being 3,893.382, compared with 4,755,796 in the preceding year.

The buses returned receipts of £113,472, against £103.534 in 1934-3.5. Passengers carrled numbered 18,123,735, against, 16,143,240, and the mileage was 2,32,3,753, compared with 2,193,477.

Plymouth. A total revenue surpius of £1,573 was earned in the year. The surplus, together with a balance brought foro;ard of £11,684, was carried forward unappropriated.

GLOUCESTER PACT SETTLED.

TINAL details of the draft agreement for theleasing of Gloucester Corpora tion' s s bu system to the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd., have been settled. It was reported, at a meeting of the city council, last week, that the undertaking had experienced another good month.
