Sir Malcolm Campbell pointed out that the company had 89 factories throughout the•Empire. Welding had, he said, enabled chassis weight to be reduced and strength to be increased, whilst, repairs had been facilitated and made less costly. Lord Melchett also referred to the great strides which had been made in welding.

Another Burden for Drivers.

Responsibility for avoiding cattle in herds on roads in rural Hants rests with lorry drivers. Winchester has ordered 2,000 " Beware Cattle " signs to be removed.

Mr. Warren, road surveyor, Petersfield, endeavoured to secure a ruling that men should be stationed to give warning to approaching vehicles when cattle concealed by road curves were crossing. This_ suggestion was not endorsed by Petersfield Rural Council.

Why must further onerous responsibility be thrown on an already harassed, over-taxed section of the public? The principle of this matter requires thorough ventilation.

New £300,000 Company Formed.

A £300,000 company, styled the Steel Barrel Scammells and Associated Engineers, Ltd., has been formed to acquire the group of companies comprising G. Scammell and Nephew, Ltd-, Carrimore Six Wheelers, Ltd., and the Steel Barrel Co., Ltd. The authorized capital consists of £150,000 of 54 per Cent, cumulative preference shares of 21 each, and £150,000 of ordinary shares (600,000) of 5s. each. The objects are to facilitate extension. of premises and new developments.

The chairman and managing director is Mr. H. R. Hood Barrs. SMART APPEAL DECISION ON JUNE 24.

• The long-awaited decision of the Appeal Tribunal on the Smart case, which raises the vital issue of the power of objectors, will, The Commercial Motor understands, be given at King's Buildings, Smith Square', London, S.W.1, on June' 24, at 10.45 a.m. The hearing was reported at length in our issue dated April 24.

Other appeal decisions will also be given on June 24.

Perjury Charge in Records Case.

At Huddersfield, last week, Mr. Harry Dransfield, motor driver, of West Royd Avenue, Hunsworth, Cleckheaton, and a 16-year-old youth, who was his mate, were committed for trial at Leeds Assizes on charges of perjury arising out of a records prosecution. They pleaded not guilty, reserved their defence and were allowed bail.

Other important cases of this nature have been brought in Yorkshire.

£20 Fine in Hours Case.

Mr. William Murdoch, haulier, Coupiecraig, High Street, Innerleven, Methil, was fined £20 by Sheriff Dudley Stuart, at Cupar, for haVing caused several of his men to drive for periods amounting in the aggregatetomore than 11 hours in 24 hours.

In the original charge there were over 100 separate offences named, for which Mr. Murdoch was liable to fines totalling £2,160. Eighty-five of these charges were dropped. Four of the remainder were struck out by the Sheriff, because he considered that the margin was too small, and the £20 fine was imposed in respect of 21 remaining offences.

A stated case was applied for.
