THE French Army gas-producer trials, which began in March last, are approaching their conclusion. These trials have been of a particularly thorough nature and the data obtained should be valuable. The official report will be published. some time in the autumn, as Government departments in all countries work with a certain deliberation..

The gazogene trials commenced with a series of exhaustive bench tests in the laboratory of the French National Inventions and Research Office at Bellevue, near Paris. A special extension building was erected at the laboratory with the assistance of another Government department, the "Office des CombustibleS Liquides." Whilst it may seem strange that a department dealing with liquid combustibles should concern itself in the matter of solids like wood and charcoal, the raison d'ĂȘtre Of the Office is said to be that of national economy, which would justify the intrusion.

Each of the engines engaged in the trials was dismounted from its lorry, complete with the generator, and subjected to many hours of non-stop running against the dynamometer. These trials were corn Dieted on June 6th, and the engines were thereafter remounted in the lorries. On June 9th a series of short road trials began over routes radiating from Versailles. Each day's run was about 65 miles, and very many stiff gradients were included. These daily trials continued until June 12th.

On June 13th the whole convoy of lorries left for Lyons. That city was reached on June 18th, The return journey was made by a rather roundabout route via Clermont-Ferrand, Nevers and Orleans, to Ver sallies. All the lorries returned safely to the vehicle park at Sartory on June 25th. Thereafter, a second series of daily runs out and home from Versailles continued until July 7th.

This completes the active part of the trials. ' Engines and generators will now be entirely dismantled and subjected to expert examination.

The vehicles participating in the trials include ten 31-ton lorries and eight 5-ton lorries. Ten different makes of lorry are represented and nine makes of gas generator.

The gas-producers include the Autogaz, Rex, SchulzLoriot, Rarbier, Sagam, Renault, Panhard-Levassor, Berliet and Herniate. Five of the producers are using wood fuel, eight use charcoal, and the remaining five employ the highly compressed charcoal fuel known as "Carbonite."

The four Bernet lorries are fitted with the BerlietImbert-Dietrich generator using wood, The Delahayes have Rex & generators,. using Carbonite. The Dewalds Autogaz machines use charcoal. The PanhardLevassor and Renault lorries are naturally fitted with the gas generators made by those two firms. In the case of the Renault, Carbonite fuel is used and in that of the Panhard-Levassor charcoal.

One of the Aries lorries has a Sagan) generator using wood and the other a Schulz and Loriot using charcoal. The Somua lorry has a Rex generator using Carbonite, as also have the Delaha yes. The two Dewalds have Autogaz, machines using charcoal and the Saurer has a Barbier machine also using charcoal. The Peugeot lorry has a Rex machine using Carbonite.

We shalt in due course deal_ with the official report upon the trials, which should be the most comprehensive document ever published concerning gas producers.
