Features of the 1927 Programme of an Important Passengercarrying Organization.

" T U.T." is an abbreviation identi

• fying the Lancashire United Transport and Power Co., Ltd., which is known throughout Lancashire by reason of the comprehensive system of motorbus services which it maintains. The whole of South-east Lancashire inside a line drawn round Manchester, Bolton, Wigan, St. Helens and Warrington is very well covered by a network of routes on which services are operated daily at frequent intervals. This, however, is only one branch of the company's business, for amongst other activities it also organizes and runs a number of regular motor coach tours to popular centres up to about 150 miles from Atherton (its head: quarters), Manchester and Liverpool, although certain other places, such as Bettws-y-Coed (170 miles from Atherton), Grasmere (164 miles), Keswick (186 miles) and Ulverston (160 miles) are also frequently visited.

The company first commenced the operation of motor coaches in May, 1914, but, consequent upon these chassis being commandeered for war uses, the company was compelled to suspend its activities in this direction. In the spring of 1919 these services were resumed, and about a year later the first regular-service routes were opened. The company operates a large fleet of vehicles, and during last year purchased many new machines, with the result that it is now in a position to

hire out all classes of vehicle from sixseater landaulets to 32-seater saloon coaches and 52-seater double-deck buses. So far as coaches are concerned, 14, 20, 23, 28, 29 and 32-seaters are available, so it will be seen that whatever the size of the party or wherever it may desire to travel, the company is in a position to meetits needs. The organization behind the operation of tho vehicles is so thorough and extensive that the vehicles are at all times maintained in first-class condition.

The company has just issued the 1927 edition of its handbook, " Touring. by Motor Coach," which gives much information relating to the current year's programme. Special facilities are now given for single-seat bookings, the public having shown a preference for this method. It is possible to book a single seat for, say, 131ackpool on a certain day and to do the same for the return journey some days later. This year regular coach services are being run from Manchester, Atherton and Liverpool to Blackpool (daily), and Southport, Chester and Llangollen (thrice weekly), whilst Buxton and Windermere are also in the programme. As in past years, local sporting and other fixtures will be catered for. The handbook to which we have referred gives a list of 102 places with the return mileages by direct routes from Atherton, Manchester and Liverpool, as well as summarized particulars of 66 towns from the first-named centre and 32 from the last-named city. It also contains a list of the company's booking agents and a useful feature, "Where to Call, Where to Dine and Where to Garage."
