WARRINGTON'S SUCCESSFUL BUSES.

The Results of the Past Year's Working of the Municipal Services.

TUEWarrington Corporation commenced the operation of motorbuses in the year 1913 and, as was shown in the analysis of municipal bus services published iu our issue dated May 24th last, it had in use at that time seven Leyland vehicles, five being 52-seaters, and the others 40-seaters. The accounts of the motorbus department of the corporation for the year ended March 31st last have just been issued, and they reveal a satisfactory year's trading, the actual net profit which was made being £3,390.

The total income of the department during the year was £11,501, as against .£10,026 in the previous year, whilst the expenditure, including bank interest, amounted to £8,111 as against £6,952, thus showing a gross profit of £3,390 in the past year, and £3,074 in the preceding year, these amounts also being the net profit inasmuch as no loan or other charges had to be met.

The passenger receipts for the year increased by 11,507, in spite of the fact that the bus services were discontinued for a period of nine days. Two routes were in operation during the year, one to Gorsey Lane and Orford, and the other to Lovely Lane. On the former 80,405 miles were run, and on the latter 67,142 miles, the total receipts per bus-mile being 18.484d. for the first route, and 18.950d. for the second route.

The eost of petrol amounted to 3.056c1. per bus-mile, as against 3.222d. in the Previous year, and the total distance run by the buses showed an increase of 32,111 miles. The main reason for the increase in the number of miles run was the extension of the service to Orford as from June 21st, 1926. As a result of the increased mileage, the expenditure was naturally higher, but when worked out on a per bus-mile basis a reduction of 1.261d. per mile is shown.

The balance to the debit of the appropriation account on April let, 1926, was £667. Two new 52-seater doubledeck covered-top buses, costing £2,940, were paid for out of revenue, and after crediting the appropriation account with £42 10s, from the sale of two old buses and the net profit of £3,390, a deficit of £175 was shown on March 31st last. The authorities state that the past year's working has again been quite satisfactory, and, with the exception of the £175 to be made up out of the next year's, _profits, the undertaking is entirely free from debt.

The following statistics dealing with the operations of the bus department of the Warrington Corporation during the past five years are of interest:—
