THE Conservatives have studied the failure of American policies—similar to Mrs. Castle's PTA plans—and are to use the information during the Committee stage of the Transport Bill.
Said Mr. Peter Walker, Tory Shadow Minister of Transport: "The study shows that the transport system of Massachusetts, which has been in operation over three years, is a failure".
Mr. Walker said that the Massachusetts
Transit Authority had recently endeavoured to raise local bus fares by as much as 100 per cent and created a political storm of the first magnitude.
"The ratepayers in the area are already contributing between five per cent and 10 per cent of their total rates to finance transportation costs in the locality. And now there is a new charge of 2d on every packet of 20 cigarettes sold in the area in order to subsidize the Transit Authority."
