Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AGOOD indication of the steady improvement which is likely to be expected in the haulage industry may be gathered from the trade returns. The increase in British exports for November, as against the corresponding period last year, was 10.7 per cent. There was a corresponding increase in the imports of raw materials. Variation in prices is, apart from seasonal fluctuations, a positive indication of the demand for particular materials. The prices of cotton, wool, coffee, fertilizers, oil cake and seed oils have all an upward tendency.

Scotland.

Manufacturers of black sheet steel in the Glasgow district are busy. There is an improvement in the demand for plates and Sections for shipbuilding.

Dumbarton C.C. is to build a further 120 houses, whilst Edinburgh T.C. is to carry, out a five-year slum-clearance scheme, providing for the erection of 750 houses per annum. Over 500 houses are to be erected for Glasgow T.C., and Greenock T.C. housing committee has under consideration a fiveyear building scheme. Hawick T.C. proposes to construct a factory on a site in Sharston Road, Wythenshawe.

Dunfermline is to build 700 houses under a five-year plan, Hamilton has a five-year scheme for 1.900 houses, whilst -Paisley is to construct 3,000 houses. Ayr T.C. is to erect 438 houses at Braehead and Lochside, Arbroath T.C. 300 houses, and Haddington 272. Queensferry T.C. is to build 150 houses, and Troon T.C. 100. East Lothian C.C. is to build 166 houses at Prestonpans. Renfrew T.C. is to build 68 houses and Bathgate T.C., 530, whilst Motherwell -High School is to be reconstructed at a cost of £44,000.

North-east Coast.

The house-coal trade is now quite brisk. Trade in Northumberland and Durham is good, and there is a fair demand for coke. The hope of increased activity in the iron and steel trade, following Christmas. is likely to materialize. The demand for semi-finished steel is in excess of the possible supply.

Some 160 houses are to be erected on the Ferguson's Lane Estate, Banwell, for Newcastle T.C. Sunderland T.C. is proposing to erect 50 houses.

Yorkshire.

Now that Christmas is gone, it is anticipated that the. activity in the woollen industry will be resumed.

Heighley T.C. is to carry out Its slum-clearance scheme involving the demolition of 1,000 houses and the building of 750 new ones. Wakefield T.C. is to proceed 1 with a scheme for the demolition of 817 houses and the erection of 120 houses per annum during a five-year programme. Doncaster T.C. has Passed plans for a large cinema to he constructed.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

A new invention, as the outcome of which it is claimed that it is possible to make unshrinkable cotton cloth, is likely to bring inireased business to

the cotton mills o Lancashire. Most of the sales of c on goods to the home trade are for prompt delivery.

Wallasey T.C. has approved plans for the development of an estate at Leasowe Road and Reeds Lane, where 495 houses and shops are to be built. Wigan T.C. is considering extending the Municipal Buildings at an estimated cost of 06,000. Fleetwood U.D.C. proposes to construct a municipal hall in the marine gardens, a sunshine parade and a yachting pond.

Midlands.

Nottingham manufacturers of lace are anticipating a 'long period of activity. The und ear section of the hosiery business is vell employed, both in Nottingham and in Leicester. The demand for sports year is good.

The galvanized-slseet trade remains steady and there is an exceptionally keen demand for steel scrap. Staffordshire n1akers of wrought iron are handling a large volume of business.

J. and A. Brazier, Ltd., Worcester Road, Burnsgrove, is to build 44 houses in various districts for Droitwich

_ Wolverhampton T.C. has under consideration a scheme, including road widening, estimated to cost £59,000. Leicester T.C. is considering the construction of a road from the junction of Catherine Street and Gypsy Lane, the cost being estimated at £50,000.. Chesterfield T.C. is applying for sanction to borrow 2124,500 for the erection of municipal buildings on the Rose Hill Estate. Dudley T.C. proposes to erect new schools to cost £80,000.

West Country.

A cinema and theatre, to cost £20,000, are to be erected at the Square, Redruth. Wilts C.C. is to spend £13,900 on the erection of the Amesbury-Durrington senior school. It is proposed to build a cinema at Bedminster. to cost £25,000.

London and Home Counties.

The fir trade is reported to he more active than it has been for some time.

A factory is to be erected in tlempton Road, Leyton, by Commercial Structures, Ltd., 61, City Road, London, E.C.I. Bermondsey B.C. is hoping to erect tenements and shops in the Leroy Street clearance area. It is proposed to erect dwellings on the Andover Road site, Islington, and the B.C. is applying for a loan to enable it to erect a five-storey block of tenements at Sebbon Street.

It is proposed to build a County Hall at Newport (I.O.W.), the estimated cost being 240.000-250,000. The Guildford Diocesan Conference has decided to proceed with the scheme for a new cathedral on Stag Hill, the cost being estimated at £250,000. Luton T.C. has passed plans for 350 houses.
