A FIRE-PREVENTION device which 1-3. attracts attention by its very simplicity has been produced recently in Italy under the name of the Cerberus. The maker of this little appliance has achieved rapid success. The Cerberus, which is inserted between carburetter and induction-pipe flanges, comprises a light conical valve which moves freely in its container.
A wire-gauze liner screens the orifices in the upper portion of this valve and the total area of these orifices is greater than the sectional area of the induction pipe. The flow of gas is, therefore, not restricted, and while the engine is running normally the valve is held by suction in the open position. Should a blow-back occur, the valve closes instantaneously, cutting off all communication with the carburetter.
Wire gauze in itself is, of course, a good preventive, but it Will not always stop the flame from a violent blow-back. The valve completes the job with an absolutely automatic and positive cutoff.
An incidental advantage claimed for the appliance is that of reduced fuel consumption, is the passage of the gas around the valve and through the wire gauze tends to make a better mixture.
