GROWING NATIONAL INTEREST IN WORK OF THE M.H.C.S.A.

ARTY in December, when arrange11' meuts had been made for a deputation from the Motor Hirers and Coach Services Association, Ltd., to be received by the Minister of Transport, the secretary of the association sent out to 4,0(k) operators of public service vehicles, scattered over the 13 traffic areas, copies of a circular announcing briefly the subjects which would be dealt with by the deputation, and asking for support and comment.

The deputation attended upon the Minister on December 16th, and the matter was dealt with fully on page 684 of our issue dated December 22nd.

A large number of replies to the circular had been received before December 16th, but they still continue to arrive at the offices of the association at 12, Spring Street, London, W.2, so that at the time of going to press well over 1,700 replies have come to hand. These indicate, in a manner which was not anticipated, the growing interest up and clown the country in the work which the 11.13.C.S.A. is doing for

public service vehicle operators. Apparently it is being realized that the constitutional policy of the association, already recognized by the Minister of Transport, the Traffic Commissioners and others in official circles, is the policy which is likely to be of the greatest service in removing the difficulties that have been created by the Road Traffic Act.

The replies have revealed that a number of small associations of independent operators, the existence of which had not hitherto been recorded, has sprung up in various districts, and several of these associations have been making inquiries as to terms of affiliation with the M.H.C.S.A. The arrangement is that affiliated associations pay to the central body 5s per annum per member, which

nearly covers the extra administrative cost involved, including dispatching to each member a copy of The Motor Coach and Onvoibtt..? Review, the official organ of the M.FI.C.S.A., dispatching to each association's secretary a copy of every circular sent out by the central office, and general help and advice concerning all matters of importance.

The M.H.C.S.A. has instituted a general council to deal with matters ` the scope of which affects all affiliated bodies, and each such body is allotted two seats upon this council.

The following associations are already affiliated :The Motor Omnibus Proprietors Association, of South Wales; the South-Western Motor Coach Owners and Operators Association, of Wiltshire ; the Bristol and West of England Coach Owners Association; the Margate Independent Public Service Vehicle Owners Association ; the Motor Coach Owners Association, of Birmingham ; and the Newbury and District Bus and Carriers Association.
