Port 'recovered well'

'THE PORT OF Southampton says it "recovered well" from last year's crane collapse.

Operations at Southampton Container Terminal were disrupted following the collapse of a quayside gantry crane on to a container ship after high winds on 18 January 2008, which damaged the crane and caused a suspension of all quayside activities.

Steven Young. deputy port manager at Southampton port. tells CM: "We believe we have recovered well from the setback. We were basically back to normal by July last year. We invested £11m in two new cranes in 2008 and plan a similar investment in two new cranes this year.

This week the port opened its £7m European Vehicle Terminal, built on five levels and with a footprint of just under one hectare.

It will house up to 2,500 new cars for export destinations in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas In 2007, Southampton handled 653,000 vehicles, of which 68% were British-built exports. Figures for 2008 have not yet been released, but Young says they arc expected to be about 1015% down on 2007 "Although vehicle volumes have been affected by the current economic situation, it is important we consider the long-term outlook and invest now for the future.he adds.
