A capacious high-root 3.5t Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 311 CD1, proved a practical van with strong fuel economy and handling.The downside was a 107hp engine; and the retrofit bulkhead enjoyed a squeak or two.
The 6x2 Volvo FH13.480 with Globetrotter XL cab was. at 12 months old, a sought-after late-plate truck, with Volvo going the extra mile pimping it up to owner-driver status.
At test. also pre-credit crunch, it was valued at 274,500 [ex-VAT], Ludicrous in today's market, but at the time, sold through Volvo's Selected Used Trucks, the price represented its spec and condition.
The final test was an lveco Daily 35S12 3.5t panel van. 11 wasn't quiet the voluminous equivalent of the Sprinter and lacked the panache of the tractor. But it was clean, tidy, dent free and, bar the mileage, as close to factory finish as possible.
As a basic tool it lacked finesse but it did deliver and for that reason it wins our Testers' Choice for the used section.
Runner-up is Volvo, whose extra sparkle just managed to edge out the Sprinter.
