• EC transport ministers were this week meeting to discuss proposals for a maximum 48hour working week which now appear to include exemptions for some special case industries such as transport.
Britain's trade associations have said that an across-theboard limit on working hours would have disastrous effects on haulage, which is already regulated on driving time.
An immediate decision on the directive appeared unlikely as CM went to press.
