Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

nVER 1,000 tons of paper per year

are now being saved by London Transport in various ways. One of the latest is a reduction in the size of bus timing-cards, used by conductors for recording their times of arrival at 168 points along bus routes. A simple alteration in the mechanism of the timeclocks will permit cards of half the size to be employed. This small item alone saves 10 tons a year.

There is little doubt that further enormous economies could be effected by almost every concern in a large number of directions. For example, apart from posters, many public and private concerns display instruction notices, etc. These, mostly, could be quite as effective if the borders were cut down, even if the lettering was not reduced in size.

We still receive numerous letters written on only one side of the paper, and frequently enclosed in envelopes of a size out of proportion to the contents. Also, insufficient employment is being made of used envelopes ; many are obviously destroyed in opening, when, by merely slitting them, their re-use would be simplified.

In these days, when works are springing up all over the place, sparepart and other types of store increase correspondingly, and, normally, require thousands of fairly thick cards for stock recording. Many of these could be replaced by slates, chalked boards and various other means, which would free enormous quantities of paper.

Filing systems should be overhauled and all redundancies avoided. Many drawings made by designers and draughtsmen could well be on a smaller scale, so that thousands of blue-prints issued to the engineering shops, etc., could be of smaller dimensions and, incidentally, easier to handle.

Give up your paper, 'help it to make invaluable munitions and save thousands of tons of shipping. If you can conserve large amounts, sell them to a wastepaper merchant licensed by the Paper Controller ; they will be paid for at scheduled rates. If your municipal authorities neglect to collect the smaller amounts, write to us, marking your envelope " Waste Paper," and we will report the matter to the Ministry of Supply.
