Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

One of the best-known and beet-liked wee iii the motor world,is. Mr. Basil H.

Joy, the secretary to the Institution of Automobile Engineers. Mr. Joy was originally a marine engineer, but for health reasons was -compelled to give up this work. In him the institution luckily found a man who can combine with success those' qualities which render him so popular in his :position. lie is an expert engineer, and pbssesses a tactful and cowteous manner, which has helped the in-stitution to prosper through many trying periods. A day or two ago we were pleased to meet an old friend from .France in the person of Major J. H. B. Hesse, manager of the Thornycroft ,London repair depot.

Major Hesse VOHS for eight .years partner in the firm of Hesse and Savory, and was the originator of the wellknown Reese reverse gear for marine engine& He obtained his present poeitien

with Thornyerof es in May, 1913, but he i joined up as a lieutenant n the R.A.S.C. In January, 1915, and proceeded to the 3rci Heavy Repair Shop, KT., R.A.S.C., at St. Omer. Whilst there he was mentioned in despatches. He was made captain in October, 1915, and attained his majority in January,1917. He was at the 4th 'Heavy Repair Shop for nine. months, and was then transferred to the

M.T. Inspection Branch. After four bouts of trench fever he was invalided out in March, 1918, and returned to his present post. Thornycroft's repair depot has, until recently, been employed on Admiralty work in connection with the C.M.13s: From our knowledge of Major Plesse's character, we were not surprised to find that he has not experienced any labour trouble since his return, for few men can command such respect and loyalty from his employees as can he with his fair dealing, tact and cheerful outlook on life.

Amongst the "Personal Pars" included in our issue of last week we regret that we alluded th Mr. McKnight, of Belsize Meters, Ltd., as hailing from T.Iirmingbare ; this should, of course, have read from Manchester.
