John Withers

GILTSPUR BULLENS Transport Services' new national sales manager for its computer and machine moving division is John Withers. Mr Withers was previously International Air Radio's sales manager in Bahrain, and in his new position he will direct and coordinate all sales operations for the division.

Butlers Warehousing and Distribution Ltd has promoted Keith Batterson to Southwestern regional marketing manager based at Avonmouth. He was formerly forward planning officer with Butlers.

Norman Simmons has become director of engineering with Fruehauf Europe Incorporated, a subsidiary of the Fruehauf Corporation of America. Mr Simmons previously held the same appointment with Crane Fruehauf Ltd.

John Stevenson has retired from the National Bus Company after a total of 48 years in the transport industry. Mr Stevenson became general manager of Lincolnshire Road Car in 1972, and since 1978 he has been on secondment to the Department of Transport in London as bus adviser.

Obituary

We record with regret the death of William Fraser.

William Fraser was born in 1908, and after graduating in Arts at Glasgow University joined the Trent Navigation Company in 1933 until it was nationalisectin 1947. Mr Fraser then became managing director of haulage contractor J. Spurling Ltd, and in 1950 he was appointed to the parent board, later becoming chief executive and finally chairman of Transport Development Group Ltd. The company expanded under his leadership, and on his retirement in 1970 he entered a new career as chairman of Transport Development Australia Ltd where he stayed until 1973.
