were down last year—this time by some three per cent, said Mr. R. J. Ellery, chairman of the company, presenting the annual report.
Referring to Trent express services, Mr. Ellery said that the company had held its own in spite of the continued growth in the number of private motorists. Day and half-day excursions were adversely affected by the weather, but the patronage of Trent's extended holiday tours constituted an all-time record.
He said that the company may be forced to increase fares if present claims for basic wage increases and cuts in working hours were successful.
Mr. Ellen: welcomed Mr. L. Mapleston, secretary of the Transport Holding Company, to the board.
During the year Trent acquired 10 new 77-seater double-deck buses, 20 new 41-seater semi-coaches and four new 37-seater luxury coaches. The company is currently taking delivery of a further 10 77-seater double-deckers and will shortly be taking in 24 51-seater dual-purpose single-deck vehicles suitable for use on both stage carriage and express services. The single-deckers will be the first Trent has had built to the new dimensions of 36 ft. by 8 ft. 21 in., and will replace a similar number of old-type double-deck vehicles of low seating capacity.
Turning to the future, the company has on order, for delivery in 1964, 16 53-seater single-deck buses, again replacing the old and smaller type of doubledecker; eight express service coaches with 49 seats; and three luxury private hire coaches of the same capacity. All these vehicles will be to the new dimensions, and in addition Trent has ordered five 40-seater luxury coaches for use on extended holiday tours. These will be 31 ft. 10 in. in length.
