Fade and Brake Squeal Overcome?

A NEW type of brake-shoe spring, for

Which the claim is made that it combats brake fade, has been produced by Scientific Engineering Appliances, 26 Central Chambers, Ealing Broadway, London, W.5. It is also stated that it eliminates brake squeal and lasts longer than a normal spring.

• The resinous paint applied to conventional springs is blamed by the firm for the defects which their products are said to overcome: Paint chips off the springs and is ground to a powder. A resin deposit on the facing has a lubri-; eating effect when the brake is applied for a long period, as when descending a hill, and resin dust on the springs intensifies squeal, the spring being held to be the source of resonance.

When brakes squeal, there is also a supersonic vibration causing metal fatigue leading to premature spring failure, it is explained.

S.S. springs, as the products are known, are coiled from galvanized steel-spring wire. Prices compare with those for normal springs.

Aids to Packaging A RANGE of mechanical instruments

which record shock, impact ot vibration occurring on a vehicle from any direction, is now available from A. Latter and Co., Ltd., 43 South End, Croydon. Surrey, who are distributing the instruments by arrangement with -Testing Machines Inc., of New York.

Manufactured by the Impact-O-Graph Corporation, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A., the instruments have three styli which, when excited by impact, leave a trace on a waxcoated paper tape. Results are indicated in units of gravitational acceleration, feet per second free fall and ft./lb.

-Aimed at reducing guesswork and improving conditions in packaging and transport generally, the Impact-O-Graph instruments have a variety of applications from checking the riding qualities of vehicles to determining the properties of cushioning materials.

The range consists of several models. the main difference lying in either their sensitivity to shock or in the speed and method of tape propulsion. Some will record up to 300 times g, others in fractions of g. whilst some tape will ruri continuously on batteries or clock motor for 28 days, others will ,advance only when the instruments are jolted.

Cold Galvanizing Compound ANEW development has taken place in the zinc-rich cold galvanizing compound distributed by J. H. Sankey and Son, Ltd., Aldwych House, London, W.C.2, for the manufacturers, Corrosion, Ltd., under the trade name of Glopane.

Like the standard and universal grades, Glopane V.N. consists of a very fine zinc dust carried in a plastics base with a binder and plasticizer. Applied by the usual paint techniques, it is said to give a degree of protection comparable with that obtained from hot-dip galvanizing or hot-zinc spray.
