Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TRANS-CONSULT has taken its ongoing row with the Traffic Commissioners still further, claiming a planned meeting with the Secretary of State for Transport.

Managing director Alec Hayden wrote to the government demanding that Alistair Darling look into the current furore surrounding the use of part-time transport managers, which has had repercussions for Hayden's firm. Hayden says Darling has replied and agreed to discuss the matter.

"He's the Traffic Commissioners' boss. We want to sit down with Darling and ask him to look at some inconsistencies throughout the traffic areas as a whole," Hayden says. I layden says that the firm's campaign has already been bolstered by EC transport chief Loyola de Palacio's apparent backing of its interpretation of the law (CM 21-27 Aug). Hayden is adamant that no legislation exists which states a firm must employ a transport manager full-time.

Transport consultant Mick Waddington agrees with Trans-Consult's campaign, but warns that it has upset a lot of people in the process.

"[However] the TCs need knocking back a few pegs. Not all TCs are as bad as others, but some think they are god when all they are is a public servant."

No TCs were available to comment as CM went to press.
