Surely it would not appear unreasonable if our industry leaders requested that Lord Hutton, at the completion of his present duties, investigate the apparently rampant racism that appears to exist in the enforcement agencies policing our industry.

The revealing article in CM(24-30 July) disclosing the activities of these agencies should have raised great anger in our industry, and awoken the sleeping tiger that must exist in our trade associations and unions.

Of the 14,000 charges laid at the door of our industry, only 26 were levied upon our continental visitors our competitors.

These are the same visitors/competitors who, when one glances across into their left-hand drive vehicles appear, in many instances, to have defective tachos and defective speedos. And who also, to avoid the delays of our speed-limited vehicles, tend to use the third lane of the motorway at will.

Someone is 'taking the tnichael' and has been doing so for years.

In our multiracial society, any government agency that targeted 14,000 of one against 26 of another would be hounded from office with cries of injustice ringing in their ears.

I would, as an international operator/driver, like to have a country such as the banana republic of Great Blairtannia on my route, providing me with an opportunity to deliver/reload while classing that visit as a "break".

Any inquiry launched by Lord Hutton would have to consider the EEC directive "Enforcement with Equality" and our enforcement agencies' apparent failure to comply with it.

On completion, Lord Hutton should then present a case to the European Competition Commissioner, Mario Monte. Still, we don't have to wait for Lord Hutton; we have the FTA and RHA, who could actually achieve something for their members.

We must tilt the scales of justice back in our favour-not at some undisclosed time in the future, but now.We as an industry have for many years been struggling, unable to compete on a level playing field.

If you are a member of an association ring them, demand that they shift themselves in your interest NOW and your MP to get off his/her behind.
