Local councillor backs drivers call for more HGV parking in Black Country

A LOCAL councillor is joining truck drivers fighting to prevent the loss of more overnight HGV parking spaces in the Black Country.

Walsall Council says the truck park, which is less than a mile from Junction 10 of the M6, is needed for road improvements.

But Carol Rose says the town will only be left with 20 dedicated HGV parking spaces even though it is an obvious stopping-off point between London and the NorthWest. "It really annoys me the way truck drivers are treated as second-class citizens. They are building a new De Vere hotel at Junction 10 for businessmen. Just because drivers don't wear suits and ties doesn't mean they are any less deserving of good facilities."

Rose, who is married to a trucker, is to hand in a petition with more than 200 signatures demanding that the 30-space park at the junction of Pleck Road and Wolverhampton Road be saved.

She is threatening to organise a convoy of HGVs through the town centre unless the council responds positively.

A council spokesman confirms that an HGV park in Green Lane closed down several years ago."Our planning officers have identified a need for this sort of facility and are planning to review lorry parking provision." No date has been fixed for the review even though the truck park is set to close next year.
