Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Christian Salvesen drivers walk out of Tesco depot. Guy Sheppard reports.

ONE OFTesco's main distribution centres, based in Lincolnshire, suffered its first one-day strike over pay on Monday (31 August) follow ing a breakdown in negotiations. The walkout by 50 drivers and fitters severely disrupted Christian Salvesen's multi-user cold storage depot in Easton,Lincolnshire. The Transport & General Workers Union (T&G) says veiled threats about the future viability of the depot were made by the company during last-ditch talks to avert the action.

Geoff Espin. T&G regional organiser, says: "Frankly, we quite expected them. The company has a lot of disgruntled drivers on very poor rates of pay who deserve better. They certainly don't need lobe threatened."

The strike is expected to be the first in a series at the depot and follows the start of an overtime ban last Thursday (CM 28 Aug-3 Sept). Salvesen's original offer to drivers was rejected after the union claimed it would have been totally self-financing through productivity and shift changes.

Espin says a revised deal was worth about 8%, but half of this was still self-financing.

A Salvesen spokesman says: "Further to recent speculation, Christian Salvesen can confirm that it is firmly committed to its ongoing operations at the company's Easton depot.

"Suggestions to the contrary are totally unfounded."
