Members of the Egyptian delegation to this country visited Coventry a few days ago and were entertained to lunch by Mr. W. E. and Mr. R. C. Rootes. In his response to a speech of welcome, given by Col. J A. Cole, OiB.E., the Egyptian Minister for Finance made it clear that the British motor manufacturers would benefit considerably from the closer Anglo-Egyptian relations. The Minister of Communications spoke of the great road developments which are to be undertaken in Egypt following the signing of the treaty.

Leyland Oil-engine Improvement.

An alteration to the spray characteristics of the 8-litre oil engine manufactured by Leyland Motors, Ltd., Leyland, Lanes, has, we are told, unproved its • efficiency, resulting in greater power and better fuel consumption. These improvements are particularly in evidence on heavy services, and we are told that a reduction in fuel costs of as much as 10 per cent, is being obtained.

Extensions to E.R.F. Works.

Important extensions are being made to the works of E. R. Foden and Son (E.R.F.), Ltd., these having been necessitated by a demand for increased production. The new buildings will be employed only for chassis erection. There is a particularly good demand from the South African market, among recent orders received being one from the Modderfontein dynamite factory and the Municipalities of Johannesburg and Roodeport.

When a Water Cart Becomes a Trailer.

At Nottingham Shire Hall a fine of 10s. was imposed on W. H. Ashley, Hawthorne Terrace, Nottingham, for an offence under the Road Traffic Act, while his father, A. Ashley, amusement caterer, Hawthorne Street, Nottingham, was fined 10s, for permitting the offence. It was stated that the younger defendant drove a locomotive, drawing trailers, along Derby Road, Eastwood. On the water cart, it was alleged, were coals, which fact made it a trailer, so that the locomotive was drawing four trailers, whereas only three and a water cart were permitted.

Charing Cross Bridge: Committee's Report.

Last week, the London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee on Charing Cross Bridge issued its report, which will be laid before the highways committee of the L.C.C. at its meeting in October. The committee has arrived at the conclusion that " the necessary improvements of the cross-river facilities in the neighbourhood of Charing Cross cannot be provided by other means than a new bridge in the locality." In connection with the tcherne, a number of important interests was consulted, including 'lie leading transport organizations.
