Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Length: 10.8m Capacity: 33m3 (43 yards3) Weight: 8.8 tonnes Axles/brakes: BPW ECO Plus axles with disc brakes. Axles 1 and 3 lift.

Floor: Keith V-9 steel Running Floor II, with radio remote-control.

Body: Hollow aluminium extrusion planks with additional outer skin to give two air-gaps for high thermal efficiency. Tailgate: Hydraulically operated split door, with rearwardsloping frame preventing materials hitting rear dome before discharging.

Sheeting: Harsh front-to-back hydraulically operated, with insulated sheet.

Miscellaneous: Aluminium wheels, hydraulically operated, lifting rear under-run bar, four cameras, on-board-weigher and audible warnings for turning, reversing, door opening and discharging.

Power for the trailer’s floor and other mechanisms comes from a hydraulic ‘wet kit’ on the tractor. “Experience has taught us that the pump runs for quite a long time for a moving-floor, so we help our customers chose a good, durable pump,” says Santry.

He identifies the clean-out mechanism as particularly critical. It is essentially a movable front bulkhead with a tarpaulin-like sheet attached and resting on the trailer’s floor. The weight of the load on the sheet “walks” the bulkhead to the rear of the body as the load discharges; a hydraulic winch retracts it for the next load. The difficult bit is the seal between the bulkhead and the trailer sides, achieving a good clean-out to prevent cross-contamination between loads. “We’ve spent a long time getting it right, so we know the pain of the learning curve that others are now going through,” says Santry, adding: “Ours now works well 99% of the time for 99% of products.”
