An enterprising advertising wag once came up with the tag line ‘try something new today’ – and in the world of road transport something truly new is often hard to come by.

That is why, as we embark on day two of Commercial Motor Live, we hope that those of you who attended the successful first day enjoyed trying something new. If you were one of many who got behind the wheel of a new vehicle for a spin around Millbrook Proving Ground, we hope it gave you food for thought when it comes to your next fleet purchase. If you visited our Quiet Delivery Depot, we hope you found something new to introduce into your operations.

This week’s tie-up between the Isle of Wight’s Steve Porter Transport Group and Southampton’s Meachers Global Logistics shows real entrepreneurial spirit and the willingness to try something new. It allows both businesses to be regional and

national at the same time, and eliminate duplication across their respective networks, shaving costs without affecting service. This is a trend we don’t see reversing as it becomes harder and harder to grow organically. With the economy stagnant, now is surely the time for operators to try something new – be it in the fleet, the transport office or operationally. Remember, it’s the things you don’t attempt that you’ll regret... Christopher Walton
