The government has made developing vocational skills one of its top priorities and more money is available for developing people than for developing a business per se. The Learning Skills Council will provide free training for employees up to NVQ 2, (equivalent to 5 GCSEs) or, for employees aged between 19 and 25, up to NVQ 3 under the Train to Gain programme.
Courses are available in warehousing and distribution, or carrying and delivering goods, and can help train drivers for their LGV licences, although the licence acquisition itself is not paid for.Th ere is also funding for literacy, numeracy and IT skills.
Some funding is available beyond NVQ 2 but any money received must be matched by an employer contribution.
Greg Cejer, head of regional operations for Skills for Logistics, says: "Any transport firm wanting to find out what is available should talk to their regional Skills for Logistics manager and get a free training assessment for their firm.
"Self-employed people are not currently covered, but we hope that will change in the coming year. Pilot schemes are already running."
