IGHTER control has helped ave the Home Office £80,000 a ear in vehicle hire charges. Speaking in London this week, lame Office departmental transort manager Bill Ilett said that -le use of Fleetplan managelent information had made it ossible to gain greater control f the vehicles, even though -ley are spread round 220 locaons.

The fleet is controlled from .orby, but vehicles are based at risons, immigration offices, nd other Home Office centres. he fleet has been reduced by reeding out under-used ehicles which were identified y Fleetplan, he said. The Safety Articulated Vehicle (SAV) is based on a Leyland Roadtrain 16.28 tractive unit, and has two trailers, a Crane Fruehauf curtainsider, and an H&G low centre of gravity reinforced polyester tanker.

The Roadtrain has been modified to include an anti-skid braking system, anti-roll fifth-wheel coupling, headlamp levelling, and tyre-pressure monitoring. It also has a front under-run bar, brake lining wear indicators, road-speed governor, bulbfailure indicators, and a fireproof fuel system.

The CF trailer has air suspension fitted for improved roll stability, and automatic slack adjusters for the brakes, as well as other safety devices such as side under-run guards and load-restraining systems.

The H&G tanker features a low centre of gravity and good side and rear under-run protection. Like the CF trailer, it also has air suspension.

The complete outfit will appear at the eighth International Experimental Safety Vehicle Conference at Wolfsburg, West Germany, later this month.
