DIRATE Japanese manufacturers
have now invaded the light engineering field. The Singapore agent for Pollard Bearings, Ltd., Ferrybridge, has sent to England a carton containing ball bearings which are 5() per cent. cheaper than those marketed by Pollard's.
The carton bears the name " Bollard Bearings," and the pack is identical with that produced by Pollard's, except for the exclusion of the word genuine," and the addition of "Made in Japan."
Used extensively in the rear axles of vehicles, the British-made bearings cost 20s. a dozen, whereas the Japanese imitations sell for 10s.
Mr. John King. Pollard's managing director, said this week: "This is an inferior article, not made of the correct steel, which can be passed off to a person unfamiliar with the techniques of such matters. If the manufacture of this counterfeit article continues it will do great damage to our prestige in the field of light engineering."
The chairman of the Japanese Ball Bearing Association has issued a statement from Tokyo saying that art immediate check will be made on the complaint. Meanwhile, Mr. King has made representations to the Board of Trade, and is contacting other trade associations in this country whose markets arc suffering from Japanese imitations.
