Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

W/E recently dealt with a number of YV specialized vehicles supplied to the Iraq Petroleum Co., Ltd., for use in the oilfields. The picture here reproduced shows a Bedford S-tonner fitted with a Crane semi-trailer, one of a number of such vehicles delivered to the same company.

Each machine has a power-operated 3,000 lb. two-speed forward winch, which obtains its drive from the powtr take-off on the gearbox, via an extension shaft and thence through a twospeed gearbox. The transmission of power then goes through a worm and worm-wheel assembly, which is housed on a sub-frame at the rear of the driver's cab. The worm-wheel shaft forms the main transverse drum shaft, passing across the chassis frame, and is supported on the side opposite to the worm assembly by a substantial bearing.

The main drum, the shaft of which is mounted on bronze bearings, carries 100 ft. of i-in. diameter steel cable. A dog clutch is incorporated between the worm-wheel assembly and the end of the drum, and it is through this clutch that the power for hauling purposes is taken. For paying out the cable, the dog clutch is released, and a fine degree of control is obtained through the medium of a band brake fitted on the drunt shaft at the opposite end to that of the dog clutch. This band brake is provided with a control from the driver's cab.

At each end of the main shaft there is a second hauling bollard, for what may be termed secondary hauling purposes.

The bodywork on the semi-trailer incorporates a roller at the front and rear, so that the main cable can he paid out without rubbing on the body and thus causing damage.
