• Road haulage bosses could find their pay policy between men and women coming under extra scrutiny if an Equal Opportunities Commission policy being spurred on by the Transport & General Workers Union is successful.
This week Margaret Prosser, deputy general-secretary of the T&G, joins a newly formed EOC taskforte in its three-year campaign to eradicate the 20% average pay loss suffered by women carrying out the same job as men. In road transport it is estimated that men earn 25% more per hour than women.
The appointment means T&G officials should be raising the pay gap issue with hauliers during their negotiations. The Equal Opportunities Commission wants all companies to set up pay reviews to stamp out illegal and unfair discrimination.
