VIAJOR POLICY document Tared by Lothian officials is criticised last week for its ppalling" dismissal of lightpid transit — modern imways — as an answer to linburgh's transport 3blem.

The charge came from the ottish Association for Public ansport.

The association's chairman, Morris Bradley, said other aj or cities in Europe and North America run tramways in preference to an all-bus system.

The association will make the point to regional councillors and officials attending the association's exhibition on "Transport futures for Lothian," which runs all this week in the city's Royal Mile.

Dr Bradley said the region did not appear to be taking the option of light rapid transit seriously. They were not saying that a system should be built now but that it had to be investigated. The council should be inviting other cities in Europe with tramway systems to express their views.

Munich over the past five years had achieved a 50 per cent increase in the use of public transport and a 25 per cent reduction in traffic through the city centre.
