MRROBERT BEVERIDGE, M.Inst.T., a director of the Scottish Omnibuses Group and general manager of Scottish Omnibuses, Ltd,, is to retire shortly. Ile started his transport career in 1901 in his native Aberdeen, when he served as an apprentice in the locomotive shops of the former Great North of Scotland Railway. He began his long association with the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., in 1914. He is this year's president of the Scottish Road Passenger Transport Association. In 1944 he was appointed a member of the committee set up by the Scottish Council on Industry to investigate facilities for tourists in Scotland, from which emerged the Scottish Tourist Board. He was also appointed a member, in 1949, of the Glasgow and District Transport 'Committee, formed to investigate the transport requirements of Glasgow and district, which produced the Inglis Report. Scottish Omnibuses are seeking a successor to Mr. Beveridge at a starting salary of about £2,500 a year.

A5-TON lorry attained 107 m.p.h. on a U.S. Air Force airfield at Bentwaters, near Ipswich, last week. It was driven into a nylon barrier to test

its efficiency in arresting landing aircraft. The speed was gained by using six rocket devices, as employed for supersonic aircraft.

OXFORD CHANGES ROAD PLANS

PROPOSALS to build relief roads through Christ Church Meadow and the university parks have been dropped by Oxford City Council. Plans for alternative routes were adopted on Monday, and they will come before next Monday's council meeting with a view to their being sent to the Minister of Housing and Local Government as an amendment to the Oxford development plan.
