ENTITLED "Small-lots Bureaux: the I-L.Ineed for a nation-wide network," the paper read by Mr. Isard was similar to one presented 18 months ago. The author suggested that the returnloads bureau, one of the Association's activities, should be reformed so that it could proceed on the lines now established in some areas for the organization of small-lots bureaux. (Small lots are consignments of furniture, etc., which do not exceed 200 cubic ft. in volume.)

Mr. hard said that it was difficult to arrange for full return loads, the principal trouble being the impracticability of matching dates. There was also the fact that the customer, having engaged a particular contractor to carry out the removal of his furniture, was not always pleased to find that a van belonging to someone else was being loaded with his household goods.

These objections do not generally apply to small lots, which are usually available to be picked up at any time. within reason.

In presenting this paper the unusual

procedure was followed of cullieg upon two other members to give theie views; and for that purpose Mr. Wilkinson, Torquay, and Mr. Turnbull, Leeds, played their parts.

Mr. Wilkinson stated that the smalllots bureau in Torquay was working most successfully. "Mr. Turnbull was not so happy. Townships within his area were as far away as 50 or 60 miles. Mr. Isard taking up the story front there, pointed out that Torquay Was ti holiday resort and people on holiday were apt to buy items of furniture

which they naturally wanted to be conveyed to their homes. The area covered by the Torquay bureau was compact, and easy to work. Mr. Turnbull in Yorkshire coOld hardly expect an operator workingfrom Leeds to pick up a small lot from Richmond in the far north of that large county. These facts, Mr. Isard pointed out, gave substance to his recommendation that these smalllots bureaux should be nationally, distributed and each should be Confined in its activities to an area of approximately 10 miles radius.
