A FT ER having carried about
2.500,000 tons of open-cast coal from sites in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, Cawood Wharton and Co.. Ltd., of Leeds, has lost the contract to the Road Haulage Executive.
According to Mr. Eric W. Towler, chairman of the company, the R.H.E. agreed to work at a much lower price than the figure quoted last year by the company. Mr. Towler points out that all the work is over short distances. He also alleges that the R.H.E. has increased rates for certain traffic on long-distance work.
The Standing Joint Committee of the Automobile Association, the. Royal Automobile Club and the Royal Scottish Automobile Club has recommended the universal introduction of " Zebra " and light-controlled crossings.
