Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• While we understand that this year, MoT testers have been "taking it easy" on many operators' failure to fit spray suppression equipment, a crack-down is expected at the end of the year.

No one knows how many trucks on the roads today would fail a test, but the suspicion is that it's a very large number. Aerodyne Equipment surveyed 36 vehicles, at an Institute of Road Transport Engineers show at Solihull, legally needing this equipment and found that only 10 (28%) met the dimensional requirements of ES A0200 (Part 1).

The remaining 72% failed on the following points: Fault No of vehicles with this fault Tyre(s) wall-to-wall width not fully spanned by flap 14 Flap-to-ground clearance exceeded 10 Valance depth insufficient 5 Valance length insufficient 2 Second steer axle incorrectly treated 2 Rv exceeded (wing too distant from tyre) 1 Gap between flap and valance 1 Wing valance intermittent 1 Flap missing altogether (when required) 1 Flap too far back 1 "This makes an average of nearly 1.5 different faults per failed vehicle," says Aerodyne. "These trucks and trailers came from a broad spectrum of the industry; the errors appeared to be mainly due to mistaken fitting, with some incorrect specification too. If vehicles at a prestigious show produce such a high failure rate, one wonders what proportion of the nation's commercial vehicles would fail their MoT on spray suppression alone.

"Whatever one's views of the merits of BS AU200, failure to comply with the law is likely to cost the unfortunate operator (and possibly his suppliers) a great deal of money in vehicle down-time and in the rectifying of substandard fitment." Aerodyne Equipment holds stocks of Clearpass anti-spray kits and spares available for nationwide delivery and offers a free advisory service to help the workshops of operators, bodybuilders and truck dealers. This service, also available to parts factors, includes written explanatory materials and charts. Circule turbocard No 60.
