Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A reflective safety strip to highlight the side of lorries and trailers to traffic at night is being made by London Artid Plastics of Slough. Research by Kent County Council suggests it can be a life-saver.

Guardian Strip, as it is called, consists of a rigid white UPVC extrusion, fitted with standard white, red or amber relfectors. It is cut to length.

"Reflective side-markings for lorries and trailers have been compulsory in Eire since 1970," says LAP, "and research carried out in Kent over the 1983-85 makes a case for similar legislation in the UK.

"The problem identified by research occurs when heavy goods vehicles turn right across rural dual-carriageways into local junctions. Increasing levels of traffic mean that the manoeuvre can rarely be carried out in one, leaving the rear of the vehicle straddling the fast lane of the dual carriageway."
