Statistics prepared by the Hull -Cor4koration show that during 1925 a sum of 169,770 was collected in Road Fund licences, the increase on the year being 17,445; The following table gives details of the various classes of licence issued in both 1924 and 1925 :— Although the difference in the figures for the respective years is indicative of the general trend of developments, we note that the number of tratncars in use had not been reduced.

L.C.C. Rejects a Bridge Scheme. One day last week the London County Council rejected a proposal for the opening of negotiations with the Government, the City Corporation and the Southern Railway Co., with the object of constructing a road and railway bridge over the River Thames at Charing Cross, and the abolition of the existing structure. Such a scheme, it was said, would involve an expenditure of about £15,000,000 and, without a full report, the moment was not opportune for expressing an opinion on the merits of the scheme.

Increasing Off-engine Efficiency. ' Recently, shipowners and engine builders haveshown increased interest in the possibilities of employing superchargers with Diesel machinery so that the output from the engines of motor ships can be substantially. increased without enlarging the cylinder sizes. Further developments are being made which, it is hoped, will give rise to a considerably improved efficiency with oil

engines, besides augmenting the output at a very small additional capital cost. An authoritative description of the system employed will be found in the May number a Vic Motor Slap.

Canada's Lorry Exports.

During the twelve months ended Vebruary last Canada exported motor vehicles to the value, of $41,715,000, or $9,000,000 above the previous year. The number of motor lorries exported was 17,447, compared with 12,784 in the previous year. The United Kingdom bought 2,361 lorries.

• Cardiff Wants Bus Bodies. Cardiff Corporation is inviting tenders for the supply of seven single-deck bus bodies, and these have to be delivered not later than May 8th. Further particulars of the corporation's requirements can be obtained from the tramways general manager, The Hayes, Cardiff.

Local Proceedings.

Luton Corporation has decided to purchase an up-to-date motor ambulance at a cost of about £1,000.

The works committee of the Brighton Corporation has authorized the purchase of six motor lorries.

Morecambe Watch Committee proposes the purchase of a first-aid motor appliance at a cost of 1400.

Glasgow Corporation has authorized the provision of a motorvan for the libraries department at a cost of £220.

Walthamstow Urban District Council has abandoned its proposals concerning the running of motorbuses in the district.

Chelsea Borough Council has decided to purchase a motor gully-emptying machine and three petrol lorries at a total cost of 12,800.

Willesden Urban District Council has accepted the tender of Leyland Motors, Ltd., for the supply of two motor fireengines at £2,635.

The London County Council has decided to provide another motor vehicle for the weights and measures department at a cost of about £430.

Barnsley Corporation is to invite quotations for the supply of a chassis of not less than 20 h.p. fOr taking a local Government-type ambulance body.

The hospital committee of the Barnsley Corporation recommends acceptance • of the tender of Messrs. Wilson and Stockall at £255 for the supply of an ambulance body.

The London County Council has accepted the tender of John Morris and Sons, Ltd., at £4,400, for the supply of two fire-engines with turntable ladders for the fire brigade.

Bexhill Watch Committee is intimating to hackney carriage proprietors that, in future, in dealing with licences, attention will be paid to the general appearance of the vehicles.

The cleansing committee of the Tynemouth Corporation has had quotations for the supply of motor vehicles for refuse collection, and is asking one of those companies who tendered to quote prices for vehicles with several minor alterations suggested by the borough engineer.
