Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

11,T,H. Magneto Construction. An Adjustable Sparking Plug. Improved Change-speed Gearing. A Perforated Exhaust Silencer.

Tins BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON Co., LTD., and A. P. YOUNG, No. 4664, 'dated 25th March, 1915.-The accompany big drawings show two seckionalviews of an improved -construction of magneto generator. The armature core is provided with laminated pole-pieces which are separately secured to the cove, the-contact surfaces being ground to provide a good magnetic circuit.

The pole;pieces are moulded into a cylinder of insulating material which surrounds and protects the armature winding. At cine end this inSulating cylinder is formed with a projecting boss on which the high-tension collector-ring is secnred by an outer flange of insulating mater.ial. The collector-ring is formed as two separate rings, the inner one fitting tightly on the boss and the -outer one fitting tightly on the inner ring; connection with the high-tension windingis made by securing the end between the two rings.

The other end of the insulating cylinder is closed by a disc of similar material which is encased by a gun-metal bushing and disc, this conveniently serving as the earthing connection.

J. A. KENNETYY-MCGIUMOR, No. 6708, dated 5th May, 1915, cognate Application No. 14,484, 1915.—This invention provides means for adjusting the central electrode in a sparking-plug axially so as to vary the spark-gap. An internally screwed bushing is provided at the top of the main insulator body. The central electrode has fixed on it at its upper end a disc formed with a screw-threaded boss which engages the bushing internally. By rotating this disc the electrode is moved upwards or downwards as may he desired. When the required position has been reached, the electrode is locked in any conxenient manner. The tubular bushing, in the form illustrated, is provided with saw-cuts at its upper end and a tapered locking nut is screwed on to compress the bushing on to the thread carried by the single. Various alternative constructions are aesoribed in the specification all of which possess the same main features. G. E. ROBINSON, No. 4548, dated 23rd March, 1915.—This specification describes change-speed gearing which is incorporated with the differential gear and is arranged to give four forward speeds and one reverse. The ordinary differential gear is used but two worm-wheels are provided on it. The driving shaft has mounted on it a worm which engages the right-hand worm-wheel shown in the drawing. A clog-cluteh is

provided for kicking the worm to the shaft and giving the top speed. This driving shaft also carries three gears of different sizes which can he brought to mesh with corresponding gears fast on a parallel shaft, which also carries a worm meshing with the second worm-wheel.

The three other forward speeds are obtained by seloctidn of these gears, thereby transmitting the drive through the second worm-wheel. The reverse is obtained in the usue.! manner by an idler pinion which can be meshed with the low-speed forward gears.

When any speed other than the top speed is being used; the worth on the driving shaft revolves idly; the worms and , worm-wheels are respectively left and right-handed so as to get the final drive in the same direction for all forward speeds.

T. ELLIOTT, No. 6972; dated 10th May, 1916.—The Object of this invention is to provide a compact and effective exhaust silencer which wils1 cause the stream of exhaust gases to be split up and then diffused and filtered. The silencer consists of a perforated tubular chamber .sub-divided by longitudinal and transverse gauze partitions into compartments which are filled with diffusing material such as asbestos fibre or wire'wool. This may be enclosed in ail outer casing perforated at eah end and if desired it can be used along the sides of the silencer.
