Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I AM CONCERNED at the content of your article entitled No Slack on Speeding (CM 12 February). The police spokeswoman's comments, if correct .threaten to alienate the respectful goodwill that currently exists between HGV drivers and the police without which they, the police, could not operate so effectively.

The spokeswoman is probably speaking from the position of a large salary with prospects of early retirement at an age when most professional drivers still have 15 years of hard work till they can retire.

She should realise that of course drivers are upset when they get speeding tickets plus penalty points, as that can equal no licence and no wage for the majority of them. Also consistently late arrival times often mean no job either.

"Speed Kills!" I hear the critics shout. Sorry sensible speed doesn't kill. But stupidity can kill, and it is stupidity of the highest degree not to realise that on many A-class roads if trucks were all to trundle along at 40mph the accident rate would probably actually rise.

Frustration levels travelling at 40 as opposed to 50mph for the often maligned company car driver on a tight schedule. stuck behind a long line of traffic, has to be almost double, and we are always seeing signs that say "Frustration can cause accidents-.

I remain hopeful that, until road speeds are reviewed taking into account the much improved technology in HGVs and the actual road itself, the majority of traffic police are content to see HGV traffic moving alo sensibly at up to 50mph, depending on the road and conditions.

The spokeswoman's comments are mere reflecting the views of superiors who are he bent on greatly swelling the coffers with evi more speed camera money with scant regal towards actual road safety.
