Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I am 43 and have been a heavy goods driver for over 20 years. Last year I had a very slight heart attack, from which I made a complete recovery. Both the specialist and my own doctor confirmed that I now have no symptoms, and need no medication.

However, the doctor had to complete a medical certificate for my employers, and because of this slight attack he could not certify that I could return to my job as a heavy goods driver. I cannot, therefore, now do my normal job, or apply for any other heavy goods jobs. As the attack was so slight, and has had no adverse effect on my physical ability whatsoever, is there any way I can appeal against this decision?

Name and address supplied.

• There is not a statutory appeal procedure as such, but you should tell your doctor that you would like a second opinion. This he may refuse. If you are still dissatisfied, you may approach the Family Practitioner Committee for the area which will act virtually as an arbiter. The address can be obtained from your Area Health Authority.
