Self-plugging Taps for Non-returnable Oil Drums.

We illustrate herewith an ingenious tap which is put on the market by C. C. Wakefield and Company, of 22, Cannon Street, London, E.C. It will be noticed that a normal form of tap is provided with an extension, which carries a simple cutting device. The idea is that the cock may readily be fitted to an ordinary oil drum, and the method of fixing is as follows : the oil drum is first pierced by the point of the screw, and this is then screwed into the drum by the turning of the whole cock until the cutter conies in contact with the metal surface of the drum. It will then, of course, cut out a perfectly clean round hole. The ordinary screwed end of the cock is then forced into the hole, until it is tight against the drum. A thick rubber washer is provided, which makes a perfectly tight joint. The makers advise that the cutter and screw be removed after the cock is fixed, in order that these parts max' not rust. The same tap may be used, of course, for any number of drums. The list price is four shillings, and extra washers and cutters may be procured at sixpence each.

Covers for Magnetos.

The Simms Magneto Company, Limited, of the Welbeck Works, Kilburn, N.W., has recently introduced a very useful form of cover for the protection of high and low-tension magnetos from oil, dust, grit and moisture. There is no novelty in the idea of using a cover for this purpose, but such covers as have previously been offered have been more or less makeshift affairs, and have been made of either sewn patent leather or jointed red fibre; the joints, in such cases, quickly break away and render the cover absolutely useless for the purpose for which it was intended. This new cover introduced by the Simms Company is made without any joints or seams; it is moulded in dies and then subjected to special treatment which, without interfering with its insulating properties, renders it absolutely oil and waterproof. it is practically unbreakable, and we are informed that the maker has the necessary dies and moulds for the production of all sizes of covers to suit the various types of magnetos made by that company:
