• Volvo is offering up to 10% more torque from the Euro-2 versions of its all-electronic 12-litre straight-six engine. Maximum power ratings on the FH12 Euro-2 range remain unchanged at 340, 380 and 420hp, but from late September peak torque will rise by 150Nm (110Ibft) to 1,700, 1,850 and 2,000Nm respectively. The full 2,000Nm, on the FH12-420, will only be

available in the top three gears. To handle the increased torque the FH12380 will come with the new RI 900 gearbox an uprated version of the R1700 ninespeed range-change box} or the SR1900 12-speed range change and splitter box.

The R1700/5R1700 transmissions will remain available on the FH12-340; the FH12-420 will get the SR1900 as standard with a reinforced clutch damper.

Other Euro-2 changes include a new "steel rail" oil ring on the piston, an uprated turbocharger and lower speed idle radiator fan. Models fitted with air suspension will gain an "intelligent" air compressor which charges at the most fuelefficient times such as overrun or at low speed. Volvo has also specified lower friction lube oils in the FH12 gearbox and back axle which, after the first change, will extend change intervals from 120,000km to 180,000km.
