A rolled-steel wheel for heavy motor vehicles has been developed by the Bethlehem Steel Co., of America, and is being placed on the market by the Consolidated Steel Corporation, of 139, Fenchurch Street, London, E.C.3.
Each wheel is-constructed from a wideflanged steel joist, the first operation being to punch three rows of elliptical holes along the web, a second punching operation separates the beam into two parts along the centre line of holes, and at the same time -divides the webs between the other holes, so that they are reduced to independent projections from the flanges. These projections are next dished and staggered so that they take the form of spokes.
Each half joist is then curled into a circular form, with the flange outwards and the ends welded together, whilst the internal ends of the spokes are welded to a central boss_ It is claimed that these wheels aro &slight as wooden wheels.
In a report regarding his annual estimates presented at the quarterly meeting of the Cumberland County Council, the surveyor places the cost of maintenance and repair of main roads and bridges for the ensuing year, to be provided out of the county funds, at £86,844, this being a decrease of £10,932 upon that estimated for the past year.
