North British Rubber Co: Extensions.

Another large company which has found it necessary considerably to extend its factories as a direct result of the increasing demand for its productions is the North British Rubber Co., Ltd., of Castle Mills, hdinburgh. This comPany, which was established in ttie early 'fifties, has a long record of continuous and systematic expansion to its credit. Although perhaps better known to our readers for the pneumatic and solid rubber band tires which it manufaeiures, the company also produces various classes of rubber goods for engineering, scientific and domestic purposes. The demand for the company's tires has been such since the outbreak of war that it has been found necessary almost to double the extensive tire-making plant. The present department, which is modern in construction and equipment, was built some ten years ago, and although the company has been able to cope promptly with business received since the outbreak of war, due in part to the fact. that it has been working night and day without cessation, it has got to the stage when the present condition prove altogether inadequate for the rapidlyincreasing demand for the company's rubber productions.

The illustration which appears at the foot of this page shows the new factory, in which work has already commenced, as it will appear when completed. It is being so constructed that it will be a simple matter to make additional extensions. • In addition to the extensions which have been made for manufacturing pneumatic tires, another factory has been erected for the manufacture of the company's solid tires. for commercial vehicles. This is a branch the importance of which has for long been realized by the N.13. Rubber co., Ltd. ; it is the department, which will be of increasing consequence as time passes.

Since the outbreak of war practically the whole of the output of the company's solid tires has been absorbed to meet Government requirements, with the result that it has been found difficult to cope with civilian orders. This feature, coupled with the fact that the company anticipates a large demand for this Glass of tire after the conclusion of hostilities, led to the decision to proceed at once with these extensions. The new building, when completed, will consist of two floors. Modern machinery and labour-saving devices are being installed throughout.

The London address of the company is 2-4, East Road, City Road, N.

An Improved External Chaser.

"OAers of Alfred Herbert's capstan and turret lathes will be familiar with the company's method of chasing threads by means of an inverted chaser holder. The company, we understand, has recently 'improved the design of its holders, and the new type has just been placed upon the market.

The actual chaser is a long dove-tailed plate of high-speed steel, clamped in a split steel holder and arranged so that the cutting edge is inverted. When cutting right-hand threads, the spindle of the lathe IC run reversed, away from the headstock, in accordance with the company's standard practice. The width of the new chaser isnauch greater than that of the previous one. It is chamfered like a die, this distributing the cut over a number of threads, the finishing of the final thread being performed by the last tooth on the chaser.

Where a recess can be provided a little wider than the chaser itself,. it is possible to cut threads of 14 pitch and finer with one pass of the sham., es it will be seen that threading by this method is, a very rapid operation. The length of the chaser is especially noteworthy; and its life is much greater than that of the old type. It also has the advantage, when cutting soft material,. that it can be ground with liberal top rake without becoming weakened in any way.

The chaser is not lheld in the holder by friction alone, as there is also a positive rocking device in the form of a. grub screw, which engages with serrations on the chaser. A simple device is also provided for allowing the chaser to be withdrawn quickly for grinding. • Alfred Herbert, Ltd., Coventry, stocks these holders for all sizes of its own make of. capstan and turret lathes.
