The developmerit of this class of modern high-capacity automatic machinery is of such interest to manufacturers whose plants have perforce to be kept up-to-date, that the short descriptions and profuse illustrations contained in this booklet cannot fail to form instructive reading to works managers and others who have charge Of machine-tool plant in factories where repetition work is the order of the day.

Bundys for South Africa.

The International Time Recording Co., which handles the " Rochester" time-card specialities, as well as the " Bundy" time recorders, notifies us that. the South African Union Government has just placed an order for 68 International "Rochester " recorders. We understand that this is the largest single order for such instruments that has ever been placed in Great Britain, and efforts to secure it, we are informed, caused the keenest competition from all makers both at home and abroad. The London address of the successful company is, 151-155, City Road, E.C., and there " Bundy " pulls some strings.

No Cureā€”No Pay.

What appearsfto be a very favourable offer is made by a company called Barimar, Ltd., of Poland Street, London, W., with regard to the repair of broken castings and forgings of iron, steel, brass, gunmetal or aluminium, as the ease may he. A process of welding known as the " II.D.R." is employed ; it is claimed that, when breakages are repaired by this method, the repaired part in all ways is as satisfactory as the

original piece. The company accepts parts which appear to be hopelessly scrapped, at their scrap value. Repair is then made, and if the repaired part should fail to stand the same test as that which the original piece would safely undergo no charge is made.

The R.A.C. Trials. One F We have received copies of certificates of tests which have been carried out by the Royal Automobile Club on two interesting proprietory specialities. The first of these trials was in connection with a " Petrolex " fire extincteur, which was submitted by the British Fire Appliances Co., Ltd. Rapid extinctions were effected by means of this device in connection with a number of petrol fires, which were arranged under varying conditions. This type of extincteur consists of a steel container, the head of which is fitted with a nozzle or holder containing liquefied carbon-dioxide. By twistingthe holder the bulb may he pierced, thus allowing the gas to escape into the container, which latter holds .a special liquid, which is stated to give off a volatile gas that is of high density when heated. The second device, of the test of which particulars have also been sent to us, was a " Donkm " pneumatic tire. This speciality consists of a solid rubber cover held in a special form of clinch rim. This cover rides on a specially-shaped air tube_ Tests were carried out on a 15.9 Arrol-Johnston car ; it was intended to run the test over 4.,000 miles. After 165 miles, however, the rear tires were found to be deflated and to be extremely hot, The canvas and rubber liners were found to be destroyed. The front tires were also found to be damaged. The tires were then withdrawn from trial.
