COVER STORY

kevin.swattowfarbi.co.uk CUMBRIAN-BASED transport operators Stobart Group and AW Jenkinson Forest Products have joined forces to order 1,000 new Scania trucks through a joint-procurement agreement.

Under the terms of the deal, which kicks off in March and runs into 2011, 800 trucks will go to Stobart, and 200 to Jenkinson, replacing vehicles and expanding both fleets.

Stobart Group has specified R4-40 6x2 Highline cabs and G400 4x2s with standard sleeper cabs, while Jenkinson has ordered R440 6x2s with Highline cabs. The deal includes purchase, lease and contract hire.

Stobart Group chief operating officer William Stobart says: The 400hp and 440hp engines specified in this order meet the latest Euro-5 environmental standards without the need for any additives or exhaust gas after-treatment, which offers considerable advantages from an operational point of view."

Penrith-based Jenkinson runs approximately 270 vehicles the majority of which pull moving-floor or bulk-tipper trailers loaded with woodchips and forest products.

Jenkinson is a manufacturing company; Stobart Group is its prime contractor for dry goods and materials. Transport manager Brian Blenkharn says the joint venture makes sense. -We are both Cumbrian firms, so we got together for the buying power; the industry is about partnerships today," he says.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' manager, commercial vehicle affairs, Robin Dickeson, says the transport industry ought to expect more joint purchasing. "It is widely used in other industries and promotes transport efficiency,he adds.
