Mr. F. D. Hildred has been appointed sales manager of the replacement department, Mintex division, British Belting and Asbestos Ltd., succeeding Mr. E. Lill, who has retired after nearly 50 years' service. Mr. Hildred, who is 44, joined the company in 1947 and after various appointments became assistant sales manager in 1961.

Following reorganization in the Press relations department of Rootes Motors Ltd., Mr. Tom Walkerley is now editor of the Dodge Drivers' Mirror and of the CommerlKarrier Clubman, with other special responsibilities relating to Commer and Dodge. Mr. W. W. Watkins has been appointed manager (sales) for the Skefko Ball Bearing Co. Ltd. in Scotland. The company has sales offices in Glasgow. Mr. Michael Clark Hutchison, Conservative MP for South Edinburgh, resigned last week from the board of Tayforth Ltd. He stated that as a Conservative he was opposed to the extension of nationalization; Tayforth was recently brought under the control of the Stateowned Transport Holding Company.

Two new appointments of deputy chief scientific officers have been made at the Road Research Laboratory. Mr. J. H. Nicholas becomes head of the construction division and Mr. M. E. Burt head of the design division. Mr. Nicholas, who is 46, became senior principal scientific officer in 1956, whilst Mr. Burt, 43, recently became superintendent of the airworthiness division at the Royal Aeronautical Establishment, Farnborough.

Mr. R. B. HaHowes has been appointed joint managing director of Castles Motor Co. (Leicester) Ltd., Rootes Group main dealers. Mr. HaHowes was previously regional manager in the Midlands for Rootes Ltd. He joined the Rootes group in 1950.

Mr. W. S. Glover (Glover and Sons Ltd.) has been appointed to the Yorkshire divisional committee of the Traders Road Transport Association as representative of the Sheffield and Yorkshire area committee.

Dr. W. H. B. Ellis has joined the board of British West Africa Corporation Ltd., and will be concerned primarily with the growing UK motor industry interests of this Birminghambased organization.

Mr. K. 1). Torrens has been appointed international development co-ordinator (automotive) of Castrol Ltd. He succeeds Mr. K. C. McCarthy, whose appointment as assistant managing director of the company was announced recently.

Mr. Peter E. A. Redpath has been appointed general manager of Caligen Foam Ltd., the Accrington manufacturers of quality urethane foams.

Mr. Donald P. Ash has been appointed manager-transportation for Gulf Eastern Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gulf Oil Corporation with headquarters in London. He succeeds Mr. P. B. Binsted, who has been elected world-wide co-ordinator-transportation.

Mr. J. Edward Simpson has been appointed managing director of Irving Air Chute of Great Britain Ltd., Letchworth, manufacturers of parachutes and industrial and vehicle safety belts.

Mr. J. Smith, town clerk of Dunstable, Beds., has been appointed head of the Automobile Association's legal and insurance department with effect from February 7. The following elections were made at the annual general meeting last week of the London area of the Transport Managers' Club:— president, Mr. A. E. Searle (Castrol Ltd.); chairman, Mr. F. W. Abdee (Thos. Paine and Co. Ltd.); vice-chairman, Mr. J. S. Scriven (Joseph Rank Ltd.).

Mr. Sydney Lamb, central area engineer of Ribble Motor Services Ltd., has been appointed assistant engineer of the company as from February 1, succeeding Mr. R. A. J. Holding, who is now chief engineer of North Western Road Car Co. Mr. Lamb, 34, is an ex-Leyland design draughtsman and joined Ribble in 1958 as a junior technical assistant

Mr. J. C. Brown has been appointed manager of the Glasgow office of the Astley Industrial Trust Ltd.

Mr. J. R. Shackley has been appointed sales manager, reflective products, of the 3M Company Ltd. He joined the company in 1957.

Mr. Arthur Pearce, general manager of The Excelsior Motor Co. Ltd., has been appointed an associate director.
