Road Tech defies slump with £900,000 server investment

By Andy Satter DESPITE THE current economic uncertainty, road transport management experts, Road Tech Computer Systems is continuing to invest £900,000 on a fourth computer server room to cope with the projected capacity requirements of its Tachomaster analysis product.

The 60-terabyte server capacity is sufficient to download and store the tachograph data for every truck in Europe for the next 10 years, reveals Road Tech managing director Derek Beevor.

-We need this level of muscle because Tachomaster customers arc given a much more sophisticated service than a standard analysis bureau has been able to offer.Beevor adds.

"We don't just analyse tachographs and give operators a report weeks or even months later; we serve up real-time information which can give operators a real insight into the efficiency of their business.

"By monitoring the activity of the driver and the truck — which is what the tacho does, after all — we are giving the operator information on their two most valuable, and costly. assets."

Tachomaster. which costs £1 per driver per week.enables companies to download, store and analyse digital tachograph information. The data is downloaded to the Road Tech servers, analysed instantly and viewable via a secure website.

Different members of a firm will have different permissions to see the data, says Beevor: "Head office can see the total operation at a glance, while each depot will have visibility of its operation and every driver gets a log-in so they can view their records and check on their performance."

The current levels of activity for Tachomaster are large, particularly as the service is still less than a year old: "We're downloading in the region of 20,000 records per day," Beevor says. "and growth remains very strong. Currently, we have approximately 10 new customers per day discovering the benefits of Tachomaster and signing up to the service."

In addition to overseeing the development and growth of Tachomaster, Beevor has also been working on a new version of Roadrunner, the company's transport management system.

This is a complete rewrite of the software and will include a number of new features aimed at giving transport operators the tools to support their customers better. The new Roadrunner is expected to he launched in April.
