THE FAMILY of a man who was killed after being hit by a Volvo artic have been awarded more than 1400,000 compensation in London's High Court.

C Butt, the Northampton-based company which last year won the Motor Transport 'Safety in Operation' award, admitted liability for the accident, which happened in July 1995. The court heard that Rajiv Chohan had his three children and wife in the car when he stopped to change a tyre by the side of the M1 near Misterton, Leics.

The crash left him pinned him to the road with his arm mangled and hot sump oil streaming over his face. It took about an hour for a crane to free him from the wreckage he died soon afterwards. The British Airways worker's young family were left traumatised by the incident, Mr Justice Jack was told.

The family's lawyer. Vincent Solanki. said it took a long time to assess the extent of the family's post-traumatic stress.

This was one reason the case took almost eight years to be settled, he said.
