The Highways Agency is split into 14 areas; Scotland and Wales look after their own trunk road networks. There are 98 HA compounds across England fielding 700 gritters, with another 50 operated by managing agents such as Optima and Mouchel.
The HA expects to spread some 500,000 tonnes of salt on English roads this winter, and with three drivers assigned to each gritter the HA is ready to run its vehicles around the clock.
